Areas of Focus

  • Department Head
  • Forest Management
  • Forest Harvesting and Utilization

Office Hours: By Appointment

Dr. Doug is one of the favorites among many students, FNR and otherwise. He is very devoted to his students, many times staying late, past his regular office hours and carrying a heavy load as an advisor. He is currently serving as Department Head. Despite this and his teaching obligations, Dr. Piirto still finds time to continue his professional development via research.

A Forestry student at the University of Nevada he earned his bachelor's degree in 1970. In 1971 at Colorado State University he was awarded his master's in Forest and Wood Science. Aside from his Ph.D. (1977) at U.C. Berkeley Doug also earned a certificate in advanced Ecology and Silviculture.
