Norm is our resident mensuration king. As reliable as clouds on a rainy day, each Fall Norm and his ever-eager class venture to Swanton Pacific to perform numerous tests and surveys. Through brambles and poison oak (eww!), Norm is ever diligent in his duties to make sure that the day's goals are reached. This is but one example of Norm's devotion to education.

After earning his bachelor's (1968) and master's (1972) degrees at Humboldt State University, Norm attended Colorado State University where he completed his doctorate (1976). Since that time he has been certified as a California registered professional forester.

Projects

  • Research in forest inventory and sampling, oaks and hardwood management, remote sensing, biomass energy plantations, hydrological studies, landslide prediction studies, and aspen habitat analysis. Travel and study includes Europe, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, and Africa.

  • 3.  Francis Raymond Award (California "Forester of the Year"), by the Board of Forestry, 1995.

In announcing the award, the Board said Pillsbury has " distinguished himself as a natural resources educator, scientist, and one who tirelessly led a relatively new and innovative forestry program to achieve accreditation by the Society of American Foresters."

  • 4. Assembly Resolution No. 547 (sponsored by Tom Bordonaro, Jr.), 1995.

The Honorable Tom J. Bordonaro, Jr. who stated the that Norm " has served as a worthy model for all public-spirited people in the state," and that his "contributions to forestry education, research and service have been invaluable in California."
